Prefácio

"Se as localidades vivem em permanente mudança, a sua História tem de ser feita e refeita em permanência, ao jeito da manta de Penélope. Três décadas volvidas sobre a publicação da obra de Luís Borges, quatro autores retomam Pias. São todos de fora, com ligações sentimentais ao Alentejo. O livro é um balanço entre a Antropologia e a Arqueologia. Entre um passado longínquo e memórias recentes e fortes. O Povo de Pias toma a palavra e é pelas suas vidas que a vida da aldeia é retratada. Se uma imagem forte nos fica é a do sentido telúrico de quem ali vive ou viveu.  Não só pelo apego à terra e às suas tradições, mas por um sentido de luta política que se tornou imagem da terra. Os autores disso tiveram plena consciência. No registo das memórias dos pienses, tornadas testemunho escrito, passam relatos dos tempos do fascismo. O livro torna-se aí mais relevante. Não se ouvirá a voz destes protagonistas, se não forem as monografias assim. Ou os projectos académicos de História Oral, de âmbito muito específico.

Quando, em 1963, os moços das sortes gritavam: «Viva o Fidel de Castro!» e «Viva a Rússia!» mais não faziam que traduzir o desejo de libertação de toda a aldeia. A isso juntavam a convicção quanto àqueles com quem podiam contar, do ponto de vista político. Cerca de uma década volvida, passaram a poder dizê-lo, alto e bom som. É esse vento da liberdade que passa por muitas das páginas do livro. «Povo de Pias» é, por isso, um título mais que acertado."

Preface

"If localities live in permanent change, their History must be permanently made and remade, like the Penelope blanket. Three decades after the publication of Luís Borges' work, four authors return to Pias. They are all outsiders, with sentimental connections to the Alentejo. The book is a balance between Anthropology and Archaeology. Between a distant past and recent and strong memories. The People of Pias take the lead and it is through their lives that the life of the village is portrayed. The strongest image we have is that of the telluric sense of those who live or have lived there. Not only because of their attachment to the land and its traditions, but because of a sense of political struggle that has become an image of the land. The authors were fully aware of this. from the memories of the pienses, turned into written testimony, there are accounts of the times of fascism. The book becomes more relevant there. The voice of these protagonists will not be heard, if not for monographs as this one. Or for academic projects in Oral History, in a very specific scope.

When, in 1963, young men who used to shout the news throughout the population shouted: "Long live Fidel de Castro!" and "Long live Russia!" they did nothing but to translate the desire for liberation of the whole village. Added to this was the conviction about who they could count on, from a political point of view. About a decade later, they could say it, loud and clear. It's that wind of freedom that runs through many of the pages of the book. «People from Pias» is, therefore, a more than a correct title."

"It is with pleasure that we join in this publication, a unique tour of the material and intangible heritage of Pias, the Municipality of Serpa and these lands and people so far to the South. Here are the landscapes and places, people, emotions and history. Sharing, experiences and friendships, from the perspective of those who come from outside and reach closer. This work is one more contribution to the safeguarding and valuing of heritage, showing what we have, what we are and what we want. It's as this as well, that development takes place.
